Are you old enough to remember the Walt Disney Film ‘The Incredible Journey’? If not, this was a story of three incredible pets (Luath) a Labrador Retriever, Bodger (a Bull Terrier) and Tao (a Siamese Cat). These much-loved pets walked over 250 miles through the Canadian Wilderness to be reunited with their family.
My own ‘incredible journey’ started when Dennis (my inspirational and hugely supportive partner) died unexpectedly in November 2012. I didn’t know it at the time, but Dennis’ death turned out to be the start of the most challenging period of my entire life. Although my story isn’t as cute as that of Luath, Bodger and Tao it does have a happy ending, with the potential to spread good everywhere it goes.
During my ‘incredible journey’ I met some extremely talented and capable professionals, and discovered the true value of friendship. I also learnt some very useful life skills. For example – tenacity, clarity, focus, clear communication, team working, gratitude, and the value of a great sense of humour. The biggest surprise was, every experience (even one as horrible as this) increases your self-confidence.
During my ‘incredible journey’ my cousin (Hugh) introduced me to Transcendental Meditation (TM) to help me deal with the extreme stress. This meant that part of every day was spent in meditation. Two of the many benefits of TM are improved intelligence and higher work efficiency.
I decided that if I was going to be hit by a life changing experience then I would make sure I learnt something useful from it. Therefore, I regularly spent time reflecting on what I was learning from this enormous challenge. After all, there’s no point going through a life changing experience if you don’t learn anything from it.
Following each reflection, I would sit and write a self-confidence exercise and so an acorn of an idea formed. I decided that I would create a self-confidence personal development programme to help others find ways to increase their self-confidence. That acorn of an idea was to be The Self-confidence Academy.
Today that acorn has turned into a beautiful oak tree. I’ve now created a suite of 19 short programmes that will help others overcome their self-confidence issues. Each of these 19 programmes looks at a different element of self-confidence – from understanding yourself and where your self-confidence issues come from, to making self-confidence your new best friend.
This suite of programmes has been bubbling away on the back burner for some time as I couldn’t find the right route to put it in the public domain. In September I attended an event run by Carol Carson (Grow Your Brands International) called ‘Creating Your Online Course’. With Carol’s help and support The Self-confidence Academy has come to life.
Today is World Kindness Day and so I’ve chosen today to launch The Self-confidence Academy. I would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has played a part in my ‘incredible journey’.
I hope you’ll visit The Self-confidence Academy and begin your own ‘incredible journey’. Self-confidence is a precious gift that will remain with you for as long as you nurture it. Here’s the link to The Self-confidence Academy – https://the-self-confidence-academy.teachable.com/p/welcome-to-the-world-of-self-confidence. The first programme ‘Welcome To The World Of Self-confidence’ is free so I hope you’ll dip your toe in the water.
Happy confidence building!
